The Science Olympiad team at Pierce is
organized and run by adult volunteers, mainly parents. Although we work closely
with the staff of Pierce, most of the coaching is done by parents or other
interested adults who are not teachers at the school. The performance of the
team is directly affected by how many adults become involved and it isn’t
necessary to have a background in science to help. In addition to coaching
events, we need people to make phone calls, arrange car pools, provide snacks,
maintain bulletin boards, shop for materials, etc.
Join the Science Olympiad crowd – it’s a great way to get
involved, have fun and make a very real contribution to the lives of many
children. For more information, call Lucinda Tripp at

What is Science
Olympiad?
Science Olympiad is a
nationwide competition designed to challenge students in science and
related fields. There are 23 events that cover both skills and
knowledge in many areas of science and technology. A team of up to 15
students prepares for these events in advance and then represents their
school on Olympiad day. The students are guided in their efforts by
adult coaches who may be parent volunteers, teachers or other interested
community members. The Wayne County regional competition is held at
University of Michigan, Dearborn sometime in late winter or early
spring. |

Science
Olympiad at Pierce
Pierce
Middle School has had an active Science Olympiad team for several
years. We are one of the few teams in this area that is run primarily
by parents. When we start recruiting at the beginning of the school
year, we are looking for both students and adults who are interested in
science and technology. After an open sign up time, there will be
several activity sessions and meetings to help students decide if
Science Olympiad is what they want to do.
Participation in the
general team is based on:
-
Recommendations. Application packets will
contain forms for recommendations from 2 adults (not relatives or
family members). Teachers and adult leaders from other activities
make great references.
-
Personality. Reliability, courtesy, and
enthusiasm will be stressed, as these are all extremely important to
team work.
If you want to be on
the competitive team, to be selected in winter ’07, the following will
also be considered in addition to the above:
- Grade
level. Students who participated last
year and those in higher grades (8th over 7th
over 6th) will be given priority, other things being
equal.
- Skills.
There may also be tryout events to test your skills in writing,
problem solving, measurement, and calculations.
