Academic
Grading Policy
EVALUATIONS
*
Students will be evaluated throughout the school year, using a 4.0
grading scale.
Each time a student is formally evaluated a letter grade or points will
be earned.
*
Evaluation
opportunities include:
playing tests, pop playing
quizzes, written quizzes and tests, at-home practice, attitude and
participation in class, and performances
(see enclosed calendar).
*
The following areas will be considered during playing evaluations: notes and rhythms, tone and intonation, , technique
(articulation, accuracy) and musicality (phrasing, tempo, dynamics,
style).
*
Students will be given sufficient
notification of any formal evaluation. With the exception of pop
playing quizzes. (These are always based on the material currently being
prepared).
PERFORMANCES
*
Performances depend on full-group participation.
If
you discover any conflicts with the concert schedule, contact the director
immediately. Performances cannot be reproduced or made-up, they are required
and worth two letter grades.
*
Only
experiences such as a death in the family, a serious illness, or a religious
observance will be considered for missing a performance.
In the event a student misses
a concert, a written note from the parent must be received by the director
when the student returns to class.
*
Students who arrive late for the reporting time
prior to a concert, who arrive without the appropriate materials, who are not
in uniform, who behave inappropriately will have their performance grade
lowered accordingly.
EXTRA
CREDIT
*
Extra
credit may be earned, but will not count as in place of credit.
Extra credit may be earned by attending musical events in which the
student does not participate. Students
earn credit by handing in a short description of the concert (one paragraph)
and a program signed by a parent or guardian.
The marking period academic grade will be raised ½ of a letter grade
for every two events the student attends.
A maximum of 4 events will be allowed in a marking period for extra
credit.
*This
grading policy is designed to credit students for their efforts and to ensure
quality in the instrumental music education that Pierce Middle School students
receive. Please contact us at
Pierce Middle School (
535-4000 ext.1604, 1626) if you have any questions or
