Seventy-eight District 5th Grade Students
Participate in Free Health Screening
South Redford School District has developed active partnerships with many community agencies. In March, 2007, several of these agencies, including Madonna University, College of Nursing and Health, Garden City Hospital, and St. Mary Mercy Hospital, worked with District employees to provide a free health screening to
78 5th grade students. With parent consent, students participated in blood pressure, blood sugar (glucose), cholesterol, and body mass index (BMI) screenings. Individual student results, along with health promotion materials, were mailed home to parents.

Group results, which reflect trends we are seeing across the United States, are as follows: Of the 78 students screened…

  • 20% had elevated blood pressure

  • 6% had elevated blood sugar (glucose)

  • 25% had elevated cholesterol

  • 20% had a BMI between the 85th  and 95th percentile indicating a risk for overweight

  •  19% had a BMI above the 95th percentile indicating overweight

This baseline assessment data will be compared to data collected at similar health screenings in the 2007-2008 school year. The health screenings will be offered to incoming 6th graders at Pierce Middle School after students are presented with nutrition and physical fitness education. Comparing the data over the two-year period will help us assess the effectiveness of the health and wellness education promotion offered within the District.

District Wellness Committee Promotes
Healthy Lifestyles and Healthy School Environment
The South Redford School District recognizes that good nutrition and physical activity are essential for students to maximize their full academic potential, reach their physical and psychological and maintain lifelong health and well-being. The Board of Education adopted a District Wellness Policy* in May 2006. The policy allowed the District to expand existing programs that focus on educating students, parents, staff and community members on the importance of healthy lifestyle choices.

South Redford Partners with Madonna University

This year,  Madonna University nursing students collaborated with South Redford District nurse, Terri Czewinski to design and implement a Health Fair for staff. The event was held at Thurston High School and provided a wealth o of information for staff members, including testing for cholesterol, blood pressure, and more.

Attendance at the Health Fair was phenomenal, participants were delighted to hear Registered Dietitian, and nutrition leader, Zonya Foco. Zonya spoke on healthy lifestyles and presented her latest cookbook, "Lickety-Split Meals."  See Zonya's web site: http://www.Zonya.com

Students from Dietitian students from U of M also participated in the event. See www.med.umich.edu/mfit for information.
